It is one of the most important topics, something that comes up in almost every conversation: the weather. In many instances, it is about that nasty cold rain, the past sun-drenched weekend, this summer’s poor weather or maybe about the white Christmas that lies ahead. Many times, weather does play an active, but not a dominant role in our daily lives.

Sometimes though, weather events can happen that are just fascinating, astounding yet at the same time terrifying and alarming. Might it be a severe summer thunderstorm, a winter storm, a storm surge or maybe a heavy snowfall with ice. After a certain time, everyone of you will have lived through a rather large spectrum of weather or bad weather, one more than the other. But there are meteorological phenomena that are so powerful and also fascinating one can hardly imagine what it would be like to experience them first-hand. Even pictures and accounts on TV or on the internet won’t give you an exact idea on how people feel, when Mother Nature shows us who is the boss.

Are you perhaps among these people that are just fascinated by such weather phenomena? Are you among those who would like to learn more about the why’s and the how’s in severe weather meteorology? Then there might just be a little weather geek in yourself, someone who would like to have that front-row-seat-feeling when watching severe storms.
Stormchasers are observing and documenting extreme weather moments of our atmosphere, mainly thunderstorms, big hail, downburst winds, hurricanes and tornadoes. The spectrum of reasons for being active as a chaser ranges from the search of the natural to the excitement to the comprehensive scientific analysis.
There are probably not more than several thousand stormchasers worldwide, the lion’s share of which being in the US but also a few hundred in Europe and Australia. Perhaps you do remember watching the movie „Twister“ back in the 90’s? Of course, reality is very different from the Hollywood-style severe weather hunting. After all, stormchasers are no adrenaline junkies. There are many other, more simple and convenient ways to get your special kicker such as a Bungee jump, skydiving or wild rafting. If one looks to find the big supercells and tornadoes, having the knowledge about the complex dynamics of our atmosphere and being very patient is fundamental. However, it can be very rewarding when nature offers a spectacle on which we have no influence at all.

Stormchasers live the weather, loud, live, daunting and genuine. It provides more than the often dry subject of theoretical meteorology, more than the indirect sampling of „rain or shine“-weather in your often fast-paced daily life and more than just watching severe weather on TV documentaries.
So you want to witness a „real“ thunderstorm? The large hail, the pouring rains, the ferocious winds that you probably won’t experience very often in your lifetime? Do you want to see how amazing bad weather watching can be (from a safe distance of course)?
We’ll invite you to the Great Plains, home to some of the strongest storms on this planet and who knows, you might just change your view on weather …
